Immigration Process Of Biblical Times

Portion to Read Gen 47-50
Message Gen 47

We all have come across Immigration process while coming to United States Of America. Way back in biblical times there were also Immigration process in the land of Egypt, without which you cannot stay in land but cross by, and very less chances where there for any immigrants to stay, cause of Famine for Example Abraham and Sarah, otherwise you should be a slave to an Egyptian to dwell in Egypt, like Joseph entered Egypt as a servant of Potiphar.

A Petitioner: Joseph was the petitioner for his family. Gen 46:31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father's household, "I will go up and speak to Pharaoh and will say to him, 'My brothers and my father's household, who were living in the land of Canaan, have come to me.

Reason for Filing: Famine but not and ordinary famine, it lasted for seven long years.

Professional Skills: Gen 46:32 The men are shepherds; they tend livestock, and they have brought along their flocks and herds and everything they own.'

Training: Joseph trains his brothers and their family how to answer the questions of the interviewer. Especially he teaches to answer one very important question, what is your occupation? Gen 46:34 you should answer, 'Your servants have tended livestock from our boyhood on, just as our fathers did.' Then you will be allowed to settle in the region of Goshen, for all shepherds are detestable to the Egyptians."

Outcome of Training: After training them, Joseph chose five to represent their families and who were good in communication and was presentable. Gen 47:2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.

Interviewer: Pharaoh (King of Egypt)

Interview Begins: Gen 47:1 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, "My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen."

Interviewer First & Final Question: Gen 47:3-4 Pharaoh asked the brothers, "What is your occupation?" "Your servants are shepherds," they replied to Pharaoh, "just as our fathers were." They also said to him, "We have come to live here awhile, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants' flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen."

Petition Approved: Pharaoh was glad to see Joseph brothers and granted them permission to settle in the land of Goshen. Gen47:5-6 Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Your father and your brothers have come to you, and the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best part of the land. Let them live in Goshen. And if you know of any among them with special ability, put them in charge of my own livestock."

Jacob blesses Pharaoh.

Gen 47:7-12Then Joseph brought in his father Jacob and set him before Pharaoh; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh. Pharaoh said to Jacob, “How old are you?” And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years; few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.” So Jacob blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

a. The days of the years of my pilgrimage are one hundred and thirty years: Jacob confessed he was on a pilgrimage. He knew that his real home was somewhere else: heaven.

b. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life: This was not a cynical statement by Jacob. He recognized that the general character of his life (lived in the flesh) and the length of his life did not compare both to eternity and to the lives of his ancestors.

c. So Jacob blessed Pharaoh: Pharaoh acknowledged Jacob was a man of God by accepting his blessing. In the Egyptian religion, Pharaoh himself was thought to be a god. They considered Pharaoh the human embodiment of Ra, the sun god. This means that it was remarkable that he allowed Israel to bestow a blessing on him.

Jacob was no more know as Jacob but Israel which means that he was representing a nation. His words can be analyzed as:

* Man of Authority
*Words of an Ambassador
*A king’s voice
*A covenant Man
*An Anointed Man Of God
*He spoke the Words of Wisdom

God may send you and me as immigrants to different parts of the world, we should honor all the authorities and there set laws to live by peacefully, but when it comes to worship other than God, we need not, for thou shall not bow before any other Gods, so does Jacob by obeying the command of God.

In the end, Joseph settled his father and his brothers in Egypt and gave them property in the best part of the land, the district of Rameses, as Pharaoh directed. Joseph also provided his father and his brothers and all his father's household with food, according to the number of their children.
