Great Name

After the flood, this is the account of Noah and his sons until God called Abraham out from UR.

Gen 10:1 This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood. The Japhethites
2 The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech and Tiras
6 The sons of Ham: Cush, Mizraim, Put and Canaan
21Sons were also born to Shem, whose older brother was Japheth; Shem was the ancestor of all the sons of Eber.

Now if you observe that two sons were born to Eber, and this is the time when the earth was divided, and the genealogy of these sons took two different ways.

Peleg <----Eber----> Joktan

25 Two sons were born to Eber: One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.
26 Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, etc
30 The region where they lived stretched from Mesha toward Sephar, in the eastern hill country.

Joktan genealogy continues with the normal genealogy and those were the people who dwelt in the eastern hill country. Let us observe what they do over there…..

Gen 11:1Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

Now, watch what happened, they wanted a great name and all of them having one language and one mind wanted to make up a tower and a city for them so that they have a great name for themselves. But God confuses them and as a result they are scattered.

Yet another genealogy starts after verse 9 with the account of Shem and you will find as you continue to study that these people were the line till Abraham. A man whom God chooses to bless and gives him a great name.

10 This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
11 And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters
16 When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
17 And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.

When God calls out Abraham out of the country of UR, who falls in the genealogy of Seth, he blesses to give him a great name. Gen 12: 1 The LORD had said to Abram, "Leave your country, your people and your father's household and go to the land I will show you.

2 "I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you."

From the above observation, we find that if man imagine that he can bring great name to his self by doing great things like building great buildings and towers, then God have to tell them that Great name is a blessing only by God to his chosen one, and any man running to get himself honor and great name, his race is vain. We see people around in our society in schools, college, work place, church among youngsters among celebrities all are running this race of getting a great name. As Bible teaches, when God blesses Abraham with blessing, with all other blessing one blessing was a great name, so why don’t we wait until the due time, so that he may lift us as we humble ourselves daily.
